From Grey to Green and Blue
Koncept 5
Introduction
To derive the strategy, ideas from workshops and analysis were applied to the study area to identify challenges and potential. The area was divided into four categories: grey, green, blue and urban development and infrastructure. Grey areas are characterised by a high degree of sealing and a lack of recreational space; green areas suffer from inadequate connections to green spaces; blue areas are bodies of water with limited accessibility; and urban development and infrastructure have barriers such as motorways and railway lines that affect the quality of the space. Measures are needed to improve and develop these spaces.
Central idea
The mission statement "From grey to green and blue - dare to take the leap" aims to use the challenges of the Fehmarnbelt crossing as an opportunity to transform grey, heavily sealed spaces into attractive living and adventure spaces. The integration of green and blue elements will create high-quality recreational areas and usable water bodies. This requires the will and courage of the entire region (Lübeck, Bad Schwartau, Ratekau), but above all joint action. The transformation should strengthen the leisure, residential and cultural offer and give new impetus to urban development in order to overcome existing barriers such as the railway line.
Strategy
The strategy for the development of the area includes three areas of action. The aim is to transform grey, sealed spaces into attractive living spaces through greening and water integration. Green spaces will be networked, existing grey open spaces will be unsealed and made usable, and water areas such as banks and ponds will be made accessible. New residential and leisure areas will be created and barriers such as railway lines and motorways will be overcome to improve mobility. An inter-municipal network promotes knowledge sharing and cooperation between municipalities to ensure sustainable and liveable urban development. The strategy focuses on spatial design, recreation and the integration of nature into urban spaces.
In-depth study
The Roddenkoppel focus area in Lübeck is a former industrial area characterised by underused commercial space. The design of the "Cultural Harbour" is intended to redesign the area and exploit the identified potential, such as the creation of new green and blue spaces and the improvement of the connection from St. Lorenz Nord to the city centre and the surrounding districts. The design pursues three central themes: the transformation of grey areas into green open spaces, the development of the waterfront ('blue space') and the use of change as an opportunity. Planned measures include the creation of a green waterfront promenade, sports and recreation areas and bathing areas.
The area will also be better connected to the historic city centre, the Wallhalbinsel and surrounding districts by new bridges. These bridges will overcome existing barriers such as railway lines and the moat. An important part of the concept is to improve mobility with a new S-Bahn station and a fast cycle path. The ‘Kulturhafen’ offers a diverse mix of uses, combining living, working, culture, sport and recreation. The quarter is to become a lively, well-connected experience space, closing the gap between St. Lorenz Nord and the Old Town. This will make the ‘Kulturhafen’ a model project for the urban transformation of Lübeck and the spatial development of the region.
