Studio Lübeck - Bad Schwartau - Ratekau

As part of the third BELT Studio, students from Lübeck University of Applied Sciences explored the topic of ‘Transfer space versus transformation space - development perspectives in the Belt corridor’ using the specific case study of the Lübeck - Bad Schwartau - Ratekau region. A region that reflects the diversity of the Fehmarnbelt region through its different urban typologies. The central questions were:

•What are the effects of the emerging interdependence and changing spatial configuration on the Lübeck - Bad Schwartau - Ratekau region?

•What opportunities are there to transform the region from a transfer area into a transformation area?

The fundamental component of the project was the development of a general spatial understanding of the Lübeck - Bad Schwartau - Ratekau region in the context of the Fehmarnbelt region. Using a spatial analysis, the students aapproached the area under consideration and summarised their observations under the analysis aspects of ‘spatial structure’, ‘public space and landscape’, ‘uses’ and ‘mobility and infrastructure’. The students also developed both positive and negative future scenarios on the topics of ‘Places of Living’, ‘Green-Blue-Transition’ and ‘Business Innovation’. Based on the analyses and under the aspect of ‘transfer space versus transformation space’, the students drew up development concepts for the region. An important component of the concepts was the development of a focus area, i.e. a closer look at an area in the region and the application of the concept developed to this area. In the two-day on-site studio, the THL students worked together with students from RUC to develop ideas for these focus areas. In addition, cross-cutting issues were identified that affect the entire Fehmarnbelt region, such as the conversion of industrial and harbour areas, problems in rural areas and nature-based tourism.

The semester and studio work was supervised by Anika Slawski, M.A. and Svenja Müller, M. Sc., TH Lübeck.
