Lübeck - Bad Schwartau - Ratekau
The axis from Lübeck to Ratekau is characterised by the variety of uses in the city centre and its surroundings. In the old town, areas such as education, health, culture, commerce and housing are all in close proximity to each other. Lübeck's important tourism sector is also very noticeable in the Old Town, especially during the high season.
To the north and north-west of the city centre are large commercial and industrial areas such as the harbour area or Lohmühle, but also large residential areas such as St. Lorenz Nord north of the railway station.
Not far from the centre of Lübeck is the town centre of Bad Schwartau. Bad Schwartau is well known for its shopping facilities and has a long history as a health resort.
This is why the health sector still plays an important role today. Another of the town's landmarks is the "Schwartauer Werke" to the south of the old town. While Bad Schwartau and Lübeck form a unit in terms of settlement structure, Ratekau is surrounded by rural areas. The variety of uses and facilities decreases significantly in this area.
Character & urban structure
Density
The region from Lübeck to Ratekau offers both dense urban structures and sparsely developed rural areas. It is interesting to note that Bad Schwartau, a medium-sized town, creates a perceptible transition between these two contrasts.
The dense mixed-use structure is the main structure in the city centre, resulting in a high population density in these areas. Districts with a density of 4000-5000 inhabitants per km2 are among the most densely populated areas in Lübeck. High population densities can be found, for example, in the districts of Holstentor-Nord (St. Lorenz Nord), Marli-Brandenbaum (St. Gertrud) and Hüxtertor (St. Jürgen). The districts of Bad Schwartau and Ratekau have a lower building density.
Green spaces
In peripheral locations and rural areas outside of densely populated areas, there are large amounts of open space that provide natural connectivity as network structures. This is particularly true to the west and north of the axis shown. As the area becomes more urban and dense, large open spaces and networked structures become rarer. The green axis from the north of Lohnmühle via Tremser Teich to the inner-city Bürgerpark in Bad Schwartau would be an exception. Regional green axes allow a wide variety of species to migrate between habitats and are therefore important for population stability. Extensive green links in the axis also provide attractive routes for pedestrians and cyclists and contribute to local recreation for residents and tourists.
Transportation
The places are connected by relatively straightforward (main) transport routes. This makes it possible to travel from place to place in a time-efficient manner. There are good public transport links from Lübeck to Bad Schwartau, especially by train.
Current projects:
As part of the construction of the Fehmarn Belt link, more trains will be travelling through the region from Lübeck, Bad Schwartau and Ratekau to Fehmarn. The rail network will have to be upgraded and adapted to cope with this increase in traffic. Accompanying measures are also planned, such as the extension or conversion of associated infrastructure, e.g. noise protection facilities or new overpasses and underpasses. The Bad Schwartau stop will also be extended and modernised. The construction of a new stop called "Timmendorfer Strand/Ratekau" is also planned.
Modernization and expansion of the rail network
Fast cycle route Lübeck to Bad Schwartau
The planned fast cycle route runs from Groß Grönau in the south through Lübeck to the market square in Bad Schwartau. In the course of the planning phase since 2018, several participation formats have been used, for example for the route. This has resulted in several variants.
