Concept 7
The Main Street
Stubbekøbing is an old market town and has a classic market town structure. The commercial street runs parallel to the harbor, the town square is centrally located in a section south of the harbor, and the town's retail life has been and is concentrated in Grønnegade, Torvet and parts of Møllegade.
As in many other cities, business development changes over time. But how has the business environment changed? Has there been a change in different sectors, with tourism/service gaining ground in the commercial life? Where are the trends heading and how can you plan for the business environment of the future? What should you focus on?
Our purpose was to map the historical business development in Stubbekøbing's city center, Grønnegade, Torvet and Møllegade and adjacent streets in the period 1970-2023 through mapping and urban space classification. Emphasis is also placed on identifying empty commercial premises and poorly maintained buildings, uncovering their history and preservation status. Based on this, suggestions are made on how to create new life and functions in the buildings.
Introduction
Map studies show how historically there has been a gradual decline in various service functions in the city center. Today there is still local commerce, but there are also several empty buildings in the main street with varying degrees of decay.
Example of function mapping in 1998
Analysis
However, there is also plenty of development potential in terms of using the main street's buildings to make local life and stories more visible. For example, by using empty shop premises for municipal service functions, or by moving offices currently located on the first floor to the ground floor. Local communities in the form of associations, tourism and local food production are also important potentials that should be focused on in the future development of the main street.
Development potential
